Ingredients
- 1 lb large shrimp (peeled and deveined): Fresh or frozen shrimp will work, but make sure they’re thawed if using frozen.
- 1/4 cup honey: The star of the glaze, giving the shrimp its signature sweetness.
- 2 tablespoons hot sauce (choose your favorite): The heat you need for that spicy kick. I recommend a cayenne-based sauce, but anything you love will work.
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce: This adds a savory depth to the glaze.
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar: A little acidity to balance the sweetness of the honey.
- 2 cloves garlic (minced): A touch of savory garlic to complement the shrimp’s natural sweetness.
- 1 tablespoon olive oil: For cooking the shrimp.
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes: Optional, for a little extra heat if you like things spicy!
- Salt and pepper to taste: To season the shrimp before cooking.
- Lime wedges (for serving): A fresh squeeze of lime to cut through the richness of the dish.
Instructions
1. Prepare the Shrimp
Start by giving your shrimp a quick rinse under cold water, and then pat them dry with paper towels. The key to juicy shrimp is making sure they’re not too wet before cooking, so get rid of any excess moisture. Season the shrimp with a little salt and pepper, and set them aside.
2. Make the Hot Honey Glaze
In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, hot sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and minced garlic. Stir until everything is well combined, and taste it to see if you need to adjust anything. Want more heat? Add a little more hot sauce or red pepper flakes. Prefer it sweeter? Add a drizzle more honey. This is your chance to customize the glaze to your liking!
3. Cook the Shrimp
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the shrimp in a single layer. You’ll hear a satisfying sizzle as they hit the pan—this is exactly what you want! Cook the shrimp for about 2-3 minutes on one side, until they’re opaque and lightly golden. Flip the shrimp and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side. You want the shrimp to be just cooked through—overcooking shrimp can make them tough, so keep a close eye on them.
4. Glaze the Shrimp
Once the shrimp are cooked, lower the heat and pour your hot honey glaze over the shrimp. Toss the shrimp in the glaze to ensure each one gets a generous coating. Continue to cook the shrimp for another 1-2 minutes, letting the glaze thicken slightly and coat the shrimp beautifully. If you like, you can increase the heat a bit to let the glaze caramelize just a little. Be careful not to burn it—this is about a nice, glossy finish.
5. Serve and Garnish
Once your shrimp are beautifully coated in that sticky, spicy-sweet glaze, remove them from the heat. Serve them immediately, garnished with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes, if desired. You can also sprinkle a bit of fresh parsley or cilantro for color and a fresh flavor contrast.
