- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3/4 cup milk
- For the Sausage Gravy:
- 1 pound breakfast sausage (choose turkey or beef for a halal option)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
- For the Pizza:
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup sliced green onions (for garnish)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Biscuit Dough
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
- In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Whisk these together until well mixed.
- Add 1/2 cup of cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Don’t worry if there are some larger chunks of butter; they’ll create those flaky layers we love!
- Pour in 3/4 cup of milk gradually, stirring gently until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix; we want tender biscuits!
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Pat it down gently until it’s about 1 inch thick. Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the dough into a circle that fits your baking sheet or into triangles for a rustic look.
Step 2: Bake the Biscuits
- Place the biscuit dough onto your prepared baking sheet and bake for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. While they bake, it’s time to make the sausage gravy!
Step 3: Make the Sausage Gravy
- In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble and cook 1 pound of breakfast sausage until browned and cooked through. If you’re using turkey or beef sausage, be sure to cook it until fully browned. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
- Once the sausage is cooked, sprinkle in 1/4 cup of flour over the sausage, stirring to combine. This will help thicken your gravy.
- Gradually pour in 2 cups of milk, stirring continuously. Allow the mixture to come to a simmer. As it heats, the gravy will start to thicken.
- Season the gravy with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder to taste. Let it simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes until thick and creamy. If the gravy becomes too thick, you can add a splash more milk to reach your desired consistency.
Step 4: Assemble the Breakfast Pizza
- Once the biscuits are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a minute. Using the back of a spoon or your hands, gently flatten the biscuits into a pizza shape. This will create a perfect base for your gravy!
- Pour the warm sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit base, spreading it out to the edges.
- Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese generously on top of the gravy. Feel free to use a mix of your favorite cheeses if you want to get creative!
- Return the assembled pizza to the oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
- Once the pizza is out of the oven, sprinkle 1/2 cup of sliced green onions on top for a fresh crunch and a burst of flavor.
- Let the pizza cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve it warm and watch as everyone digs in!
